Serving residents in the Ocean Isle Beach area is a wonderful experience due to the gorgeous surroundings and Southern hospitality. Ocean Isle Beach, which is also known simply as Ocean Isle, is a small town located between Wilmington, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC. Beautiful beaches, ocean and Intracoastal Waterway make it an amazing vacation spot which attracts thousands of tourists each year. Many real estate investors own properties for rent here with the hopes of turning it into a retirement spot in the future.

No matter whether you're a resident or a real estate investor in Ocean Isle you are well aware of the importance of an efficient air conditioning system. Nothing will put everyone in a bad mood more than coming back from a hot beach to a stuffy house. As an Ocean Isle heating and air conditioning contractor we stay very busy when the temperatures start rising.

The most common complaint we hear whenever we answer our phone is "My AC won't cool...". Believe it or not, there are hundreds of reasons why an air conditioner unit doesn't cool properly. The fastest way to solve the problem is to call a professional HVAC technician. However, a homeowner may troubleshoot four main components of an HVAC system before setting up an appointment.

Thermostat

If your unit doesn't heat or cool properly check the settings on your thermostat first and then check the batteries. Also, consider the location of your thermostat. If your thermostat is located in a cool, dark hallway it registers a much lower temperature than it can be felt in a sunny living room.

Air Filter

You need to regularly change your air filter! As an Ocean Isle heating and air conditioning contractor we can't stress that enough. Dirty and clogged air filters create issues with your air conditioner.

Circuit Breakers

A tripped circuit breaker may cause your HVAC appliance to stop working. Check your circuit breaker box and reset all breakers related to your air conditioning system.

Air Conditioner Condenser

If you are a do-it-yourself type and know your way around appliances you may want to check your air conditioner condenser. Dirt and debris such as branches or large leaves get stuck inside a condenser unit covering the coils, which obstructs the flow of hot air from inside of your house to the outside. If this happens you should remove large debris and clean it using a hose and a brush. However, before you start cleaning, make sure you turn off the applicable circuit breakers and set the thermostat to OFF to prevent any injury.

Should You Replace or Repair Your Air Conditioning Unit?

If you can't fix your unit yourself it's time to call a professional Ocean Isle heating and air conditioning contractor, such as A+ Heating & Cooling - Electrical. Upon arrival, a technician will decide if your air conditioner can be fixed or if it needs to be replaced. If an appliance requires a complicated repair you may need to consider replacing it. Deciding if you need to replace or repair your air conditioner is a complicated manner and you should always carefully weigh all your options.

Ocean Isle Heating and Air Conditioning Contractor

If your air conditioning unit is over 10 years old you should replace it. Due to the close proximity to the ocean and harsh ocean breeze, air conditioners in our area have a lifespan of 8 to 10 years, and after that the units tend to break more often and run inefficiently. How do you know your unit is inefficient? For starters, it runs all the time but doesn't seem to cool much. Additionally, if you noticed your energy bills keep rising it may be a sign your appliance is using up way more energy than it should without actually cooling your home properly.

Your air conditioning unit should be repairable if it is less than 8 years old. With very few exceptions, usually being a manufacturer's error, an HVAC appliance less than a decade old can be repaired and it doesn't have to cost you too much. If a technician who visits your home tries to persuade you otherwise get a second opinion.

Ocean Isle Heating and Air Conditioning Systems

If you, with the help of your trusted Ocean Isle heating and air conditioning contractor, decide it's time to replace your ac unit the next step is to choose the type of unit your home or office require. When it comes to choosing a new air conditioning and heating system there is a lot to consider, such as a preferred brand, size, rating and type of your new unit. Over the years, upon discussing a new system installation with a homeowner, we are often asked about the difference between a split air conditioner and a packaged AC unit.

What is a split air conditioner?

As the name implies, a split air conditioner consists of two components, a condensing unit and an evaporative coil. The condensing unit is the part of your ac system which is located outside and evaporative coil is located inside, usually in a closet or an attic.  Inside a condensing unit there is a compressor which compresses the refrigerant. During this process the hot air from inside your home is being pushed outside. The refrigerant which was once outside expands rapidly inside an evaporative coil. The hot air from inside your home blows over the coil and the refrigerant absorbs the heat from the inside of your home. As a result, the air in your house cools down.

A split air conditioning system is typically three times the size of a packaged unit when you count all of its components. Split AC systems are considered more efficient, last longer and, on average, have a higher SEER rating than their package counterparts.

What is a packaged air conditioner?

A packaged air conditioner consists of the same two components as a split system but they are both integrated into one unit. A packaged air conditioner is a smaller, more compact system than a split one and it is situated outside with the attached ductwork going into the house. On average, a packaged air conditioner is chosen over a split system if there is not enough room inside a house.

Both, split and packaged air conditioning systems serve the same purpose and with the proper maintenance they can be equally efficient over their life span.

Problems with Refrigerant

As Ocean Isle heating and air conditioning contractor we wish to educate our clients about choices they make considering their HVAC system to make sure they are always satisfied with their investment.
